SA HUNTER CRUSHED TO DEATH BY ELEPHANT DURING HUNT IN ZIMBABWE

CAPE TOWN – Reports from Eye Witness News has it that a Johannesburg hunter has been crushed to death by an elephant in Zimbabwe.

Theunis Botha was leading a hunt when they stumbled across a herd of elephants on Friday.

It’s understood that three elephants approached the hunters and Botha opened fire, prompting a fourth elephant to lift him up with her trunk.

According to Netwerk24, another member of the group fired a fatal shot at the elephant, who fell on Botha.

His company website (Game Hounds Safaris) says he perfected leopard and lion hunting safaris with hounds in Africa.

Botha is survived by his wife and five children.

CAPE TOWN – Wesgro representatives are set to boost the Mother City’s film production appeal at the 70th Cannes Film Festival.

The Western Cape’s tourism, trade and investment promotion agency says more than 50 South Africans will be attending this year’s event.

Cape Town Film Studios will also be hosting an event at the South African national pavilion on 24 May.

Wesgro’s Monica Rorvik says the South African team has received many invitations to speak with producers about co-producing films.

“We go to meet the nine co-production companies. We meet them at their panels and functions. We are trying to get meetings for our producers.”

The festival kicked off in Cannes, France on Wednesday.

START-UP: SA TO MANUFACTURE A $30 SMARTPHONE

CAPE TOWN – A South African start-up will next month begin mass producing a $30 smartphone, which it describes as the first of its kind to be manufactured in Africa.

Onyx Connect based in Johannesburg is gearing up to launch an entry-level smartphone for about $30 that includes front and back cameras, 1GB Ram.

CNN reports that while most low-cost smartphones come preloaded with apps that can use up half the storage space, onyx will give the user a “clean” phone.
