CAIRO – A team of gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying Coptic Christians south of Cairo Friday, killing at least 26 people, including children, and wounding 25 other people, Egyptian officials confirmed.

JOHANNESBURG – An actor in the popular soapie Scandal! has been arrested along with 16 others at a brothel in Springs, east of Johannesburg.

The six men and 11 women — aged between 19 and 43 years old — have been charged under the Sexual Offences Act.

The arrest follows another bust at a brothel in the same area.

Five teenage girls were allegedly held as sex slaves in what appeared to be a barber shop.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on charges of human trafficking.

MAN DIES AFTER SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDING HIS GIRLFRIEND FROM RAPE

A man was killed on Friday evening as he tried to fend off a gang of men attempting to rape his girlfriend.

DURBAN – The couple were walking along Riverside Road in Durban‚ a popular running and biking trail which has become notorious for muggings.

According to ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak‚ the couple was outside the Umgeni River Bird Park when a taxi pulled up next to them.

A gang of men surrounded the couple and began assaulting the man as he tried to defend his girlfriend.

“Paramedics arrived to find the man with multiple injuries‚ severe facial injuries and internal bleeding. There was nothing that they could do for him and he was declared dead on scene‚” Vermaak said.

“The 21-year-old woman was treated for multiple‚ serious injuries. She was later rushed to a nearby hospital.”

Vermaak said that a pathology report would be conducted to determine the exact cause of the man’s death.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined.

MAYOR RESCUED AFTER COMMUNITY HOSTAGE DRAMA IN N. CAPE

LICHTENBURG – The Mayor of Ditsobotla in the North West has been freed after being held hostage in the Lichtenburg municipal offices.

The community is apparently unhappy with the Integrated Development Plan final report, which was tabled on Tuesday.

The municipal buildings have been torched.

Around 40 community members allegedly took Mayor Daniel Buthelezi hostage.

The group threatened to set themselves alight if their complaints about poor service delivery in the area are not heard.

The protestors have been arrested.

CAPE TOWN – Police have swooped on a Mitchells Plain house and found a hidden arms cache.

Officers stormed the house in Tafelsig on Sunday following a tip-off.

They confiscated two shot guns, a grenade and R5 ammunition.

Detectives are questioning five women in connection with the discovery.

TRAFFIC: POLICE DETECTIVES ARREST 4 SUSPECTS FOLLOWING SPATE OF CASH HEISTS IN CAPE TOWN

CAPE TOWN – Police have arrested four people in connection with a spate of cash in transit heists and armed robberies in the Cape.

A 32-year-old was arrested for a robbery at a security company in Malmesbury, where several firearms were stolen.

In another raid in Malmesbury, detectives nabbed two suspects in connection with a cash in transit robbery in Athlone last month.

A man was also arrested in Khayelitsha for a cash in transit robbery in Harare in February.

TRAFFIC: GOLDEN ARROW MONITORING KHAYELITSHA OPERATIONS AFTER BUS ATTACKED

Two Golden Arrow buses have come under attack in Khayelitsha over the past two days.

CAPE TOWN – The Golden Arrow Bus Service says it’s keeping a close eye on its operations in the Khayelitsha area.

Two of the company’s buses have been targeted in Makhaya over the past several days.

In the latest incident on Monday evening, a bus was set alight.

On Sunday, another bus was targeted.

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services says crews on Monday had to be escorted into the area by police due to protest action in the community.

Golden Arrow spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer said: “We’re monitoring our services very closely and we’ll avoid certain parts of Khayelitsha. We’re very disappointed and concerned by the attacks on our buses.”
