CAPE TOWN – Since the commencement of a new enforcement strategy to help clamp down on reckless and negligent taxi drivers, nearly 100 drivers have been put behind bars.

At a sub-council meeting held in August, Milnerton Traffic Service principle inspector, Desre Benadie, indicated that their team expected the arrest rate to increase by 73% for taxi drivers committing any moving violation.

Since the start of the month, a total of 96 taxi drivers have been put behind bars, Richard Coleman, spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services, confirmed last week to Tygerburger.

A total of 55 of these arrests were related to reckless and negligent driving, while 28 were related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Coleman said 12 arrests were for outstanding warrants and one was related to giving false information.
