JOHANNESBURG – Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says the latest gender-based crime in Ekurhuleni shows the need for swift convictions.
A Tembisa DJ was handcuffed on Sunday night after allegedly assaulted his girlfriend with a spanner.
According to Eyewitness News, a video of the attack is being circulated on social media.
In a statement, Mbalula has condemned the attack as shameful and disgusting.
Video footage shows the DJ striking his girlfriend several times with a spanner while she is seated in a car. People can be seen trying to stop the assault.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates Court on Monday.
