CAPE TOWN – The Overstrand Municipality says Kleinmond remains calm, following earlier protests.
A group of about 500 people took to the streets. They burnt rubble and tyres and looted shops.
It is understood the demonstration was linked to a failed tender of a community member.
Overstrand Mayor Rudolph Smith explains what sparked the demonstration: “People are very unhappy about the cleaning tender, contract. There is a gentleman from Zwelihle who got a tender, he’s the new contractor to do the cleaning in the Kleinmond area. People were very upset because the gentleman was coming from Zwelihle – outside of Overhills in Kleinmond.”
Earlier the Overstrand mayor was en route to Kleinmond where violent protests erupted on Monday morning.
Some pictures posted online revealed extensive damage to some of the shops situated in the town’s main road.
The roads were apparently severely damaged as well and the routes around the affected area, which remained closed.
