CAPE TOWN – Muizenberg residents have drawn up a petition to save the area’s colourful beach huts. A Facebook thread has been gaining traction since Monday amid claims the City of Cape Town has decided to remove the structures.
Most of the users have expressed their outrage saying they have not been consulted about any decisions on the famous huts.
According to a Muizenberg community page on Facebook, some doors of the iconic blue, red, yellow and green wooden huts on Muizenberg have already been removed.
In reply to the angry comments on social media, ward councillor Aimee Kuhl says they have been in discussion with coastal management over safety risks around the huts.
She says she strongly argued for finding ways to maintain the iconic structures.
Kuhl has called on creative thinkers to come forward with solutions to keep the huts, while also considering the upkeep in a harsh climate.
The City of Cape Town has not yet been available to provide clarity on the matter.
