CAPE TOWN – The family of six relatives who died in a shack fire in Philippi will receive counselling.

Lukhangele Makhanda, Nosimanye Masitha and their four children, aged between two and nine, died when the blaze ripped through their home earlier this week.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

The Western Cape Social Development’s Sihle Ngobese says: “The department’s social workers will be rendering psychosocial support, including other assistance, to the remaining family members and members of the community who witnessed this tragedy and were left deeply traumatized by the incident.”

On Wednesday, an eyewitness said that the flames spread rapidly and residents fought in vain to rescue the trapped family.

“Even now, the voice of the mother screaming ‘please come help, please come’ is still ringing in my head. It’s very emotional; sad and painful.”
