JOHANNESBURG – The City of Joburg says that it is waiting on the national government to address the issue of illegal foreign nationals who are occupying buildings in the city.
About 700 people are living at a stadium in the Joburg CBD after they were evicted from buildings believed to be hijacked.
Mayor Herman Mashaba has made it clear that the city will do everything to provide housing for South Africans, saying foreigners aren’t the responsibility of the city.
His spokesperson Karabo Tledima says that they want to start the deportation process as soon as possible.
“There’s an intricate process. The city has spoken to repatriation and the Home Affairs Department and others. But at present, there’s nothing that’s received from the national government.”
