CAPE TOWN – Newlands looks set to host the Rugby Championship match between the Springboks and All Blacks later this year.

This comes after the Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU) obtained the necessary required safety certificate for the stadium.

A spokesperson for the union told Sport24 that the safety certificate was awarded on Thursday and they now await confirmation from SA Rugby that the Test will be staged at Newlands.

The safety confirmation was needed in order for Newlands to fulfil the requirements of the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act which came into effect in March this year.

The WPRU was asked to submit a stadium security certificate by the end of June in order to secure the Test for the ground.

SA Rugby made it clear in a media release that Newlands was its “first choice venue”.

Although no other stadium, either in Cape Town or around South Africa, was mentioned as a possible alternative should Newlands not have had the security certificate in time, the 2010 Soccer World Cup-built Cape Town Stadium was mooted as an option.

The Test is scheduled for October 7 and will be New Zealand’s first visit to the Mother City since 2008 when the All Blacks won 19-0.

Springboks’ Rugby Championship fixtures:

August 19 – Springboks v Argentina, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth

August 26 – Argentina v Springboks, Estadio Padre Ernesto Martearena, Salta

September 9 – Australia v Springboks, NIB Stadium, Perth

September 16 – New Zealand v Springboks, QBE Stadium, Albany
