CAPE TOWN – Western Cape traffic officials have arrested approximately 70 motorists since the start of the long weekend.
Officials have been checking thousands of vehicles for roadworthiness, documents and performing breathalyser tests.
Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa says most of the motorists who’ve been arrested were found driving under the influence.
“Over 4,000 drivers were tested for alcohol and we arrested 55 drunk drivers. The highest reading was seven times over the legal limit in the Worcester area.”
Africa has appealed to motorists to be vigilant with traffic volumes expected to increase as holiday makers head home on Monday.
