CAPE TOWN – The City of Cape town is playing host to thousands of delegates attending the Africa Travel Week which is underway.

The event, taking place at the Convention Centre, offers more than 20 countries on the continent the opportunity to boast with their main tourist attractions.

Tour operators, local outbound travel agents and destination marketing organisations are among the 5,000 delegates attending the exhibition.

Managing Director of Weave Exhibition (WE) Africa’s Carol Weaving says tourism provides opportunities for employment and economic growth.

“We’ve just been downgraded to junk status and our exchange rate declined. So I think this is a huge opportunity for South African and for Africa where their currencies are not doing so well because it becomes more affordable for tourists to go into these countries. More importantly than ever is the focus on tourism.”

Wesgro’s Tim Harris says they have also made sure the Western Cape is well represented at the event.

“We need to maintain a position as the place where the world comes to think about how to roll out strategies for the continent and WE Africa secures our spaces in the travel industry for doing that.”
