Cape Town City stormed to the top of log with a comprehensive 4-2 win over Platinum Stars in an Absa Premiership clash played at the Moruleng Stadium on Thursday night.

City led 2-1 at halftime.

As it stands, City set the pace at the summit with 45 points, followed by Wits on 44, Kaizer Chiefs on 42 and Mamelodi Sundowns on 38 points.

It was a great result and performance from City as it clearly demonstrated the depth in their squad. With both central midfielders out – Roland Putsche (suspended) and Mpho Matsi (injured) – they were still as effective as ever. And, as has been the case all season, their finishing was top-class.

City took the lead in the 30th minute with a fine goal through Thabo Nodada. It was just reward for Nodada, whose progress has been hampered by injury over the last year. This was his first start for 2017 and he duly signalled that he’s back and in fine fettle too. A minute before halftime, the Cape side took a 2-0 lead when striker Lehlohonolo Majoro scored with a great header.

On the stroke of the interval, though, Stars pulled one back via the boot of Enocent Mkhabela – and City went to the break 2-1 in the lead.

A few minutes into the second half, City coach Eric Tinkler took off Majoro and brought on Judas Moseamedi. The move paid dividends in the 66th minute, with Moseamedi making the most of his arrival as a substitute by scoring a great goal and increasing City’s lead to 3-1.

In the 75th minute it was 4-1 and it was the in-form Aubrey Ngoma to the fore with a sweet finish for the Capetonians.

Henrico Botes managed to net a consolation for Stars just before the end, but, all in all, the Rustenburg side just never had enough to deal with City’s clinical finishing.
