CAPE TOWN – The driver of a 4×4 vehicle is lucky to be alive after he collided with a train at a Cape Flats crossing.
Emergency Medical Staff were called to the level crossing along Albertyn Road, Muizenberg on Sunday at about 8pm.
It has yet to be established whether the driver had any passengers on board.
Traut says: “Muizenberg police attended the scene and can confirm that no-one was injured during the collision.”
“An accident report was completed and filed at Muizenberg SAPS. No criminal case has been opened.”
Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott, confirms there are functioning booms at the crossing.
It is not clear whether the boom had malfunctioned, or whether the car driver had ignored signals to stop to allow the train to pass.
“We confirm the incident occurred at 20:04 at False Bay level crossing,” said Scott.
“Yes, there are booms at the Albertyn Road level crossing and we only know about the driver of the vehicle being present.”
She adds there had been no delays with the train service following the accident.
“There were no train delays or cancellations as a result and the line was reopened at 20:55,” she says.
“The train in question was en route to Cape Town.”
