CAPE TOWN – Here’s a reason to feel proud to be South Africa: we’re steadily building a reputation as a race car manufacturing hub.

Century Racing’s Julien Hardy is part of the movement and he’s involved with the design and manufacturing of racing cars for the Dakar Rally.

Earlier on Tuesday, he spoke to students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s (CPUT) Bellville campus.

Hardy believes the manufacture of Dakar Rally racing cars in the country can compete with the best in the globe.

“We’re in a very good position at the moment; we’ve got the reputation, the cars and good things are happening for South African racing at the moment.”

Future race car manufacturers at CPUT welcomed practical experience shared by Hardy.

“It’s possible, he was once a student here and it can be done.”

The Dakar Rally is considered to be one of the toughest off-road rally races in the world.
