Cape Town – A council worker was shocked to find the body of a newborn baby in a dirt bin – just metres from a Cape Flats hospital.
The baby girl was found on a street corner outside Bishop Lavis Day Hospital just after 9am on Friday with her umbilical cord still attached.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk, says an inquest has been registered.
“At about 9:20am, Bishop Lavis SAPS attended to a scene in Lavis Drive, Bishop Lavis. On the scene they found the body of a newborn baby girl with umbilical cord still attached, in a dustbin,” he confirmed.
“The baby was declared dead on the scene. The baby’s body was discovered by a municipality cleaner.”
“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
