CAPE TOWN – Gun owners will be able to hand over illegal firearms to police when an amnesty period begins next month.

Last week Cabinet announced a decision was taken to allow people to hand over illegal firearms to police without facing charges. The process would be open for six months from April.

Briefing members of Parliament on Friday, Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko said there were some issues that would need to finalised before an official declaration.

“One of the issues includes ongoing community engagement around amnesty and firearm control in our society.”
