CAPE TOWN – The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu)says it will apply for a permit to strike against the City of Cape Town’s apparent failure to adequately address the water crisis.

The union has accused the municipality of failing to come up with plans to address water scarcity and reduce water consumption.

It’s understood the city has enough drinking water for just over 100 days.

Cosatu’s Tony Ehrenreich says the current water crisis affects the poorthe most.

“Poor people are most dramatically affected when it there are water shortages because the wealthy can go and buy bottled water at stores. Cosatu believes that there must be action taken to ensure the interests of poor communities are taken to account with this water crisis.”

Ehrenreich has accused the city of lying about the real extent of the crisis, saying Cosatu believes dam levels are much lower than what the municipality is reporting.

“From what we’ve learnt, there’s a much more desperate situation because the percentage levels are lower, but also the amount of water they can use from the bottom of the dam is less than what they are calculating. So the crisis is what greater than what we’re being led to believe.”

Ehrenreich says the city must be held accountable.
